Welcome to Basirhat College

In mid-November 1947 Basirhat College was founded and since then it has been standing for more than half a century on the banks of river Icchamati, which flows by this ancient seat of learning and culture that has witnessed many souls of the soil rise to eminence.

Course Offered

The College offers both Honours and General Courses of study in 3 streams, viz. Science, Arts and Commerce.

The College runs three sections viz., Morning, Day and Evening

Library

The College Library is just sufficient to meet the immediate requirements of the students. The books – both text &reference, journals, collection of papers would amount to about 20,000 to which every year materials are added from the UGC Grant and the College fund..

Facilities

Available facilities are all geared to wellbeing of the student community at large and to the persons attached to this institution. These include a useful Library, a center of Netaji Subhas Open University, a branch of UBI, a Canteen, an Auditorium (under construction), a Cycle & Two-wheeler stand, Student Union Room, Boys’ Common Room, Girls’ Common Room etc in the main campus.

Off—campus facilities include a Boys’ Hostel named Khan Bahadur Hostel.

LIBRARY

The College Library has a collection of books – both text & reference, journals, collection of papers, few educational CDs and floppies (given with some books) to meet the immediate requirements of the students and the other members. Membership of the Library is open to the Students of the College, Teaching Staff of the College and the Non-teaching Staff of the College. The number of books would amount to about 20,000 to which every year materials are added from the UGC Grant and the College fund. Internet facility is added recently for the deserving candidates. Integrated automation software would be introduced shortly along with the student administration module.

Library Rules & Regulations:

· Library Cards are issued to the students from the Library on production of the College fee books.

· Each bonafide student gets two Library Cards: i) Reading Card & ii) Lending Card

· In case the Library Card is lost, a duplicate card may be issued only after submission of a formal application and a fee of Rs. 5.00.

· Library Card is not transferable.

· Library Cards must be surrendered before filling up Forms of University Examination or to get Transfer Certificate.

· Students of Honours classes can avail maximum two books at a time and that of general classes one book at a time.

· Lending hours for Morning Section: 7.30 am to 8.30 am and Lending hours for Day and Evening Section: 11.30 am to 1.30 pm.

· Late fine for delayed return of books: Re.1.00 per book per week.

· Working Hours: Monday to Friday: 7.30 am to 5.30 pm

· Saturday:7.30 am to 1.30 pm

Netaji Subhas Open University

The College runs an enrolment centre under Netaji Subhas Open University. Courses offered:

Certificate Course: Human Rights

Diploma Course: Consumer Affairs.

Bachelor Degree: Library and Information Science

P.G. Diploma Course: Co-operation, Journalism and Mass Communication.

Post Graduation: Bengali, English, History, Political Science, English Language Training, Social work, Commerce, Mathematics, and Public Administration.

UBI Branch

A branch of United Bank of India is located along the Eastern Boundary of the college campus alongside the main road. The College has provided for the space and infrastructure that the Bank utilizes against mutually agreed upon terms and condition.

Canteen

A canteen, located along the Eastern Boundary of the college campus, has added sufficient colors to the campus life. There is a Canteen Committee to look after the problems and prospects of the canteen.

Students’ Union Room

The Students ’ Union Room, located beside the canteen, is spacious enough and equipped with required furniture to serve all the students’ union activities.

Hostel Details:

Hostel Name: Khan Bahadur Hostel

Address: Village – Jamrultala, P.O. – Basirhat, P.S. – Basirhat, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The hostel is situated at a distance of about one K.M. from the College main campus.

The hostel contains one kitchen, one dining hall adequate bathroom and toilet facility for the boarders. The quarter of the Hostel Superintendent is situated within the hostel campus.

Students from distant and remote places like Sundarban’s interior, Baduria, Hakimpur etc.avail the hostel facility for their convenience.

Students take part in playing football, cricket, volley ball and carom board for their recreation. They also take part in arranging Educational Excursion during November every year and Saraswati Puja.

At present the number of total seats available is 50. Room rent per month per student is Rs. 150.00.

Students are required to produce Distance Certificate for availing the Hostel facility.

Rules & Regulations to be followed by the boarders include:

Students seeking Hostel facility are required to apply through prescribed application form issued from the College Office.

The College authority bears no responsibility to run the Hostel mess during Summer Recess and Puja Vacation.

· No Boarder would be allowed to drop the University Examination at any case,

· Boarders must vacate their seats immediately after their Final University Examination is over,

· Any occupational activities on part of any boarder is strictly prohibited,

· Boarders are not allowed to keep permanent guest in the hostel,

· Boarders are required to pay the hostel rent regularly.
