Department of History
About the Department
The department of History in Basirhat College is as old as the college itself. However, initially the department took time to flourish. It got Honours affiliation from Calcutta University only in 1980-81. Since then however, it never looked back. Indeed the launching of History Honours struck a nice resonance with the growing interest of the local students to take up History as their Honours course and soon the classes were throbbing with students ready to accept new challenges of new knowledge. These students belong mostly to middle class families and marginal communities.
To fulfill the growing need, the number of teaching posts has been increased from 2 to 4. While the teacher student ratio is still much lower than the desired level, the diligence and sincerity of the teachers ensure that quite a large number of their students go on to build up successful careers in teaching and other professions. It needs to be mentioned that the teachers who have retired are still providing service towards their beloved department.
